Remembering Ben

Ben came to live with us in June last year, after a kind family rescued him from a difficult life outdoors. He was unmicrochipped, unneutered, and later tested positive for FIV.

Slowly, Ben began to settle in. He learned to trust again, and found a companion in our other FIV+ resident, Tommy Carstairs. They became firm friends.

In recent weeks, Ben’s health had declined. He experienced a few fits and had been placed on Loxicom to help keep him comfortable. Sadly, by Friday night, it became clear he was very unwell.

He stopped eating, then drinking, and I knew the time was near. I sat with him, offering water and gentle comfort. So did Tommy, who stayed close.

I stepped away briefly to get a little Gabapentin just in case — but when I returned, Ben had slipped away. Quietly, peacefully. I believe he waited until he was alone.

I’m truly heartbroken to lose him. I only wish he’d had longer with us, especially to enjoy the roof garden in summer — something I so wanted for him.

Rest easy, Ben. You were loved.
